‘Hobby gone wild’

Wichita-area brewing hobbyists are turning into entrepreneurs as they discover that their passion has a new level of legitimacy in the business world.

At River City Brewing, 150 N. Mosley in Wichita, owner Chris Arnold and brewer Dan Norton have seen growing interest in their beer over the years. The brewpub was founded in 1993 and has 16 beers on tap.

When Chris Arnold moved to Wichita in 1999 to begin running River City Brewery in Old Town, he knew the sale of craft beer was a bit novel for the market. And although customers enjoyed the six-year-old brewpub’s food and Coors Light, they didn’t exactly embrace the bolder, more complex flavors coming out of the local taps.
“We couldn’t hardly give the stuff away,” he says.
That has changed.
