Oh now here’s a thing, Joppa Stout, an award winning beer.
Brewed by Hallertau Brewbar & Restaurant and in the style that is of a Stout, they are a few minutes drive from my house in Riverhead, Auckland, New Zealand
This is a bottle of 500ml (!6fl oz), and at 5.5% ABV, a whole 2.7 standard drink units, and because calories in beer is import – this bottle would be about 220 calories or so.

It was a dream come true for Swanson brewer Barb Joppa when she won the SOBA New Zealand Home Brew Competition with the highest ever points score. Californian ex-pat Barbara’s prize was to have her beer brewed and commercially released by Hallertau Brewery. Joppa Stout is a full bodied beer with a lot of bitter-sweet chocolate and coffee flavours. Black in colour, with a thick tan head weighing in at 5.5% with 30 IBUs this promises to be a popular winter tipple

Chocolate in spades as you open this, deep and slightly edgy bitter,
This is a noisy beer you can hear the bubbles bursting in the thick mocha brown head that looks nice and lush, but with all that popping and banging dissipates. Nice to hear a noisy beer though.
Aroma is thick rich and burnt.
I thought….. and this is where the trouble starts – That this was too carbonated, and in world that means a distraction from the tongue. I Thought that this was also a bit thin, it didn’t have a lot of depth.
I like the fruitiness that this has in it, and the chocolate/coffee hit is about right. Nice length of taste though, doesn’t finish dry or sweet.
But it’s still too carbonated for me.
The pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 7.5 a of its things from the thing. I like it but I don’t like it enough to want to buy another. I think it has merits and has more good things than bad.

Am I enjoying it? I would enjoy it more if it was tweaked.
Would I have another? I wouldn’t
Would I share with a friend on a porch and set the world to rights? I might as it’s not a disaster and it’s low ABV makes it quite sociable.

I hope the best is to come from the rest, but he might now of course be reading teen rhyming poetry and people would lap it up.
Many stouts do not fit the classic “Irish” definition as exemplified by Guinness, either due to their hop or roast rates, or higher gravity (in the case of many American stouts). They are still basic stouts, however, not falling into any of the subclasses.
