JOHANNESBURG – Soweto is hosting one of its biggest social events this weekend.
The Soweto Beer Festival gives beer lovers an opportunity to taste more than 40 locally brewed brands, and they say nothing is more South African than a refreshing brew.
It has gained a lot of momentum, both in volumes but also in quality and enthusiasm from customers. It’s got a very strong customer base
Good friends, great food and an appreciation of locally brewed beer, is what revellers are spoilt with at this year’s festival.
So, whatever your preference for this type of beverage is, the festival is your number one stop.
It has been running for 19 years and has again not disappointed beer enthusiasts.
This once small event has evolved into a must do on Joburg’s social calendar.
“It has gained a lot of momentum, both in volumes but also in quality and enthusiasm from customers. It’s got a very strong customer base,” said festival organiser Godfrey Mautloa.
For the first time in 19 years, the event introduced a new type of craft beer – Soweto’s own, locally produced – ‘Soweto Gold Premium Lager’.
“We’ve been trialling the recipe of Soweto for three years together. Brewing in the kitchen at home, in small batches, 20 litres. It was exciting, we brewed a beer and we could taste… we improved the recipe from time to time,” said brew master Dumiso Madlala.
But, it wasn’t just about the beer tasting.
“We build relationships with breweries and see how we can help them grow,” said The Tap Room’s Dyllan Roach.
The festival ends on Monday.
