Brewing more success on Cape Ann

The word that the Cape Ann Brewing Company is expanding through the leasing of some 5,000 square feet of space on Whittemore Street represents good news on several counts — and not just because the company has truly become one of Gloucester’s and Cape Ann’s economic success stories.
By picking up the added space, to be used at the start for storage and packaging operations, owner Jeremy Goldberg and his team have also laid the groundwork for growing their brewing capacity there as well. And all of that will, when transitions are complete, bring all of the brewery’s operations and jobs right here to Cape Ann.
Cape Ann Brewing’s six years have already brought significant success. from the company’s debut with a small brewing and tasting facility at the edge of the Fort neighborhood to its popular brew pub on the fringe of St. Peter’s Square — and on the city’s Harborwalk — along Rogers Street. But many may not have known that, while brewing and shipping its draft beer from its home on the Gloucester waterfront, the company has also been brewing and packaging its bottled beer at a brewery in Saratoga, N.Y. The expansion and move into space in the old Cape Ann Forge property, at the end of Whittemore Street and high above the Annisquam River, will enable the company to consolidate all of its brewing, packaging and shipping operations right here in Gloucester.
At the same time, Cape Ann Brewing has also developed a new branding plan, which includes a reworked Fisherman logo that will re-emphasize the Cape Ann in Cape Ann Brewing, according to Goldberg. And the company will be shifting away from bottling toward using only cans as its primary packaging, a move that’s better economically and environmentally, Goldberg says.
All of this is not only a good step for the company, but good for Cape Ann’s economy — and its visibility, through the marketing of the brewery brews.
Let’s offer a toast to this little brewing company that can — and has proven so time and time again.
