DARTMOOR Brewery has signed a deal with the South West’s biggest licensed wholesaler of beers, wines and spirits that will “significantly” extend the distribution of its award-winning Jail Ale.
The distribution deal will see St Austell Brewery act as the Princetown-based business’ sole wholesale distributor.
St Austell Brewery will now offer Dartmoor Brewery’s Jail Ale, Legend and Dartmoor IPA beers to its network of independent free trade pubs, inns and hotels across South West.
Dartmoor Brewery will continue to manage distribution to its own direct customers in Devon.
Dartmoor Brewery, Britain’s highest and Devon’s second largest, is renowned for its hand-crafted ales, which it has been brewing since 1994, producing more than 2.5million pints from traditional techniques and Dartmoor ingredients.
Appointing St Austell Brewery is the latest step in an ambitious growth plan implemented during the past two years.
This has included development of a new brand identity, investment in facilities and entering the export market.
The brewery was also named The Herald’s Small Business of the Year for 2014, at this year’s Business Awards.
Head brewer Mike Lunney said: “We’re excited to begin a new partnership with St Austell Brewery; their passion for craft beer is evident in their own portfolio and we look forward to working with them to make Dartmoor Brewery’s beers more readily available to real-ale drinkers across the South West.”
The prospect of opening up opportunities via St Austell Brewery with its extensive free trade customer base wasn’t the only attraction for Dartmoor Brewery.
Mr Lunney said: “St Austell Brewery has over 165 years’ experience brewing and wholesaling beer and we felt their expertise in sales, marketing and distribution would help propel our beers to new audiences.
“We’re looking forward to a mutually rewarding partnership.”
Ian Blunt, sales and distribution director at St Austell Brewery, said: “The deal is great news for St Austell Brewery. We are delighted to be working closely with Mike and the team at Dartmoor Brewery.
“This distribution agreement brings together two independent breweries who produce fantastic beer.
“In addition to our own beer brands, St Austell Brewery also wholesales an extensive range of other beers.
“This partnership with Dartmoor will firmly establish St Austell Brewery as the South West’s number one cask ale wholesaler.
“We look forward to delivering our first-rate service to Dartmoor’s customers outside Devon and making their range of popular beers available to our free trade customers across South West England.”
Dartmoor Brewery, 1,465ft above sea level, has won numerous awards, including being named Best Regional Brewer at the Publicans Choice Awards 2013.
St Austell Brewery has nearly 170 managed or tenanted pubs, hotels and inns across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and the Isles of Scilly, including several in Plymouth such as the Ship, on the Barbican, and West Hoe’s (currently closed) Waterfront.
