Many eastern Iowans are tapping into a national trend by starting a local craft brewery in their town. According to the Brewers Association, there were 2,347 craft breweries operating in the United States in 2012. In 2013, that number jumped to 2,538.
Jerry Anderson is the owner of Bluff Street Brew Haus in downtown Dubuque. He sells homebrew and wine making supplies. He said it’s common for his customers to start brewing at home and then go on to open breweries, wineries, or distilling spirits.
“These are not just people that jumped in to the business not knowing anything. They have been home beer makers, home wine makers, their hobbies just get out of control,” Anderson said.
Franklin Street Brewing Company in Manchester has only been open to the public for three weekends. People can taste up to 9 craft beers at the brewing company. Kyle Sands is the co-owner of Franklin Street Brewing Company. He said he first started brewing beer at home.
“The last few years we have been progressively brewing larger batches at home. The last few years we kind of decided it was maybe time to do something a little bigger,” Sands said.
Jay Jubeck is another home brewer that decided to turn his passion into a business. Jubeck is currently renovating a building in downtown Dubuque to turn into a brewing company.
Jubeck said he was able to buy the building and start up Jubeck New World Brewing Company with help from the community.
“We did a Kickstarter fund and got over 175 backers and raised more than $37,000 within the community. That allowed us to have the funds to build out this space.” Jubeck said.
Jubeck said he hopes to have Jubeck New World Brewing Co. open to the public in June.
