Times-Shamrock Communications’ Electric City Craft Brew Fest has proven such a hit with local beer aficionados that one serving per year simply wasn’t enough.
Following packed events at Scranton Cultural Center at The Masonic Temple the past two springs, Brew Fest has been expanded to include a Fall/Winter Session in Luzerne County.
The Keystone Ballroom of the new hotel and convention at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Plains Twp. will host this newest incarnation of Brew Fest on Saturday, Nov. 16. Two general admission sessions are scheduled – 1 to 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 9 p.m. In addition, there will be a VIP session from noon to 1 p.m.
Tickets to the 21-and-older event are $30 in advance and $40 the day of the event, while VIP tickets are $50 and available in advance only.
Brew Fest will serve as the first major event at the new hotel, which opens its doors that weekend.
This isn’t the first time Times-Shamrock and Mohegan Sun have collaborated on a beer-centered event. The past three Septembers, the casino has hosted Times-Shamrock’s PA Oktoberfest.
“We’ve had a great partnership with Times-Shamrock with Oktoberfest over the last several years. So, the idea of doing Brew Fest was very appealing to us,” said Mohegan Sun president and general manager Mike Bean. “And with it being right at the time of the hotel’s opening, it’s a great opportunity to show off the new facility to attendees.”
“We always wanted to have a fall/winter session for Brew Fest, a Luzerne County edition, and Mohegan was the perfect place for that,” said Tim Holmes, Times-Shamrock regional director of marketing and events. “And the opening of the new hotel was perfect timing. The stars are aligned.”
This edition of Brew Fest will feature more than 50 craft beers from such marquee brewers as Brooklyn Brewing, Bell’s, Flying Fish, Long Trail, Magic Hat, Victory, Weyerbacher and Yards.
The event also will feature a number of local brands, including Stegmaier, Yuengling, Breaker Brewing, 3 Guys and A Beer’d, ShawneeCraft, Susquehanna Brewing Co. and Nimble Hill.
The emphasis will be on fall and wintertime beers like heavy stouts and spiced ales, said Mr. Holmes, noting those who purchase tickets in advance will be guaranteed a sampling glass with a two-ounce pour line.
“These are full-bodied, high-octane beers, so you really don’t want more than that (per glass),” he said.
Taste and learn
VIP session attendees will have the chance to try “really, really exclusive beers” not widely available to the general public, Mr. Holmes said. And those who like a little education with their beer can check out home-brewing discussions and the Scranton Brewers Guild-hosted Beer School, which will spotlight the topics “Drinking Like a Monk: Exploring Trappist Beers” and “USA Vs. UK: Exploring Beers Across the Pond.”
Because of the two sessions, attendees should have little worry of long lines and plenty of room to roam about. Foods like hamburgers and chicken tenders will be available for purchase, and attendees will have access to the hotel’s outdoor patio, complete with fireplace and cigar vendors.
Complimentary bottled water will be provided for hydration purposes, and cabs will be available to those who have had a little too much to drink. For those who want to stay at the new hotel, Mohegan Sun is offering special room-and-ticket packages.
It’s a day not to be missed, whether you’re a full-blown beer snob or a novice looking to enhance your palate, Mr. Holmes said.
“It’s just a great opportunity to go around and see what kind of beer you like,” he said.
