Colorado Native at the Coors plant (Joe Amon, The Denver Post)
Brewing behemoth MillerCoors announced Monday it is firing 200 workers and eliminating another 160 positions that are unfilled , but there are no indications the cuts will include either AC Golden or Blue Moon Brewing Company at The Sandlot , two local boutique craft beer incubators within the company, spokespeople said.
The Sandlot, a 10-barrel operation in a corner of Coors Field , is the testing ground for beers introduced through Coors’ successful Blue Moon line of beers. Just this month at the Great American Beer Festival, The Sandlot and its team bested Budweiser and took home Large Brewing Company and Large Brewing Company Brewer of the Year honors . The brewery has won 43 GABF medals dating to 1995.
MillerCoors spokesman Jonathan Stern said the Sandlot will not be impacted by the layoffs.
AC Golden produces Colorado Native lager and more experimental sour beers. Earlier this month, it won a bronze medal at GABF for its India Pale Lager.
MillerCoors said the layoffs announced Monday include 30 jobs at Coors’ enormous Golden plant. Through a spokeswoman, AC Golden president and founder Glenn Knippenberg said AC Golden “is not expecting any impact at this time.” Fewer than 15 people are employed at AC Golden, the spokeswoman said.
After the brewery’s IPL won the GABF medal, we asked whether there are any plans to package the beer, since it’s a successful take on a marketable style. The answer was similar: not at this time.
The layoffs come as overall U.S. beer sales are stagnant but craft beer sales are growing quickly .
