Craft Beer San Diego
Daniel Love co-owns Mother Earth Brew Co. in Vista with brewmaster Kamron Khannakhjavani and serves as the company’s General Manager. The brewery’s seen big growth since three homebrewers banded together in 2008 in a nearby garage. Now Mother Earth operates a brewing facility, tap house, and homebrewing supply store. Love recently shared several insights, which help to explain Mother Earth’s approach and goals.

Was it a given that you would work with beer for a living, or did you consider other careers?

Making beer for a living did not occur to me until I had already pursued a number of other paths. After being introduced to home brewing by my stepson, I became more and more interested in starting a business in craft beer.

What does a beer have to be for you to brew it at Mother Earth?

Interesting, approachable, aggressive, crowd pleasing, balanced, bitter and memorable.

What’s your top selling beer, and why do you think that’s the case?

Cali Creamin’ – it’s a gateway beer for non-craft drinkers and it’s a delicious beer.

How do you go about naming your beers?

We try to have fun with it and we don’t take it too seriously. We are usually inspired by a memory or an alliteration.

What are some of your most satisfying moments of working with craft beer?

All the collaboration beers we’ve done with Urge Gastropub, Pizza Port, Automatic, Churchill’s, Sublime Alehouse, Toronado, Latitude 33, Rip Current, because those opportunities allow us to work with other people in the industry and to create one-of-a-kind beers.

Where do you see the San Diego beer scene in five years, and how does Mother Earth fit into that vision?
