Poacher Brewery is a micro- brewery based in North Hykeham near to Lincoln.
At this years Lincolnshire Show food and drink producers from all over the county gathered in Lincoln to showcase their locally grown and locally made produce.
The Show which took place at the Lincolnshire Show ground on the 18th and 19th June attracted visitors from all over the county. This year was the 130th Show and over the years the event has evolved into a great day out for families, schools and people from the county, who want to celebrate all that’s great about Lincolnshire in a fun and educational environment.
The Show’s roots will always be in agriculture, but now shopping, delicious food, attractions and rides all have a place over this two day event.
One of the many food and drink exhibitors was Poachers Brewery from North Hykeham just outside of Lincoln. The micro brewery is owned by George Batterbee who has been making local bitters and ales for over 14 years.
George turned his hobby of home brewing beer into a commercial business 14 years ago after local landlords, friends and family in Lincoln tasted some of his beer. George said: “I enjoyed doing it as a hobby and it is great.”
“I produce 12 different beer on a regular basis, nine of them are bitters one is a stout, one a mild and one a larger.”
George has gained both regional and national awards for his brews. He has won two bronze medals for his bitters nationally. George said: “One was in 2008 for bitters and the latest one was in 2011 for a strong bitter. The first was a bitter called Shytalk and the latter was one for a strong bitter called Trout Tickler.”

There is a story behind every beer made at the brewery. The bitter, Shytalk, was named after an old Lifeboat that George has fond memories of seeing as a young boy at Whitby. “There was a lifeboat in the harbour and it was decommissioned and a local bought it and he then gave trips around the harbour it in,” he said.
“We are based in Hykeham and Hykeham Gold is the larger that we produce.”
Poacher’s bitters and beers are available around Lincolnshire and some of them are available in other parts of the country. They are distributed via wholesalers and other micro brewers from around the country.
You can listen to the full interview with George Batterbee below. I started off by asking him to explain what a micro brewery is and about where the idea came from to setup Poachers.
