Two Georgia breweries brought home the gold at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival.
Atlanta-based SweetWater Brewing Co. landed a gold medal for its LowRyeDer India Pale Ale and Athens, Ga.-based Terrapin Beer Co. won gold for its Tree Hugger German-style altbier.
LowRyeDer joined SweetWater’s year-round lineup in August 2012. It has a 25% shot of rye malt and is brewed with Columbus, Mt. Hood and Centennial hops, then dry-hopped with Centennial and Mt. Hood, SweetWater said.
“What a great honor it is to bring home another distinguished piece of GABF hardware as these medals represent the best brews throughout the nation,” said SweetWater co-founder Freddy Bensch. “I’ve got to recognize the passion that our brewers pump in to making our beers. This win further confirms that we’re doing exactly what we believe in: making fresh, quality beer.”
SweetWater has won 14 medals from GABF in the past 16 years, including Small Brewery of the Year Award in 2002.
Terrapin’s Tree Hugger is brewed with Mt. Hood and Vanguard hops and 2-Row Pale, Munich, CaraMunich III, Melanoidin, DH Carafa II malts.
This year, GABF evaluated 138 beer styles across 84 categories, pouring more than 48,000 gallons of beer. See all the winners here.
