Event Marketing for sure have the coolest class trips! Our last trip was to the Steam Whistle Brewing, located South, in front of the CN Tower and beside Rogers Arena (255 Bremner Blvd Toronto, Ontario) in the famous Roundhouse. Beautiful location! This historic building was once “demolished” for the construction of a 10 floor underground parking and reassembled using all its original materials.
Our tour start at Noon, we were welcomed to the brewing with a beer sample, too bad I don’t like beer, (I can’t drink it actually) but I sample it, it’s a good beer, if you are a fan you should try it. Specially because the sample is just the beginning.
History of the Steam Whistle Brewing
“The Steam Whistle story begins in the spring of 1998 when three friends were on a canoe trip in the Ontario heartland. Greg Taylor, Cam Heaps and Greg Cromwell had all been colleagues at one of Canada’s premier microbreweries producing quality beer in the late 1980′s and 90′s – before it was bought out by a national brewer and closed down. As they sat around the campfire, the self-named “Three Fired Guys” dreamed of running their own brewery one day.
They wanted to make a Pilsner that would compete with the best in the world. They wrote a plan and quickly attracted investors with their vision and passion.” (Font: Steam Whistle Brewing Website)
Fun Fact: look closely in your S.W.B and you will notice a tribute for the 3 founder, raised in the bottle, right on the bottom of it you can read “3FG”
During the tour we learned about their process, they are proud to do only one kind of beer, using basic ingredients. “DO ONE THING, REALLY REALLY WELL” is their motto. They researched in Europe the art of brewing the perfect Pilsen Beer, their recipe? Traditional brewing techniques and only four natural ingredients including spring water, malted barley, hops and yeast. And they consider their passionated and dedicated staff as their 5th special ingredient.
Fun Fact 2: They have a refrigerator in the middle of the factory where you can read “The Reward at the End of Our Day!”. Our tour guide told us each employee can have 2 beers by the end of the day. And the nice thing about it, no matter your position in the company. Everybody gather together to drink a cold beer and relax after work.
Their bottle is made of really good glass, so they can reuse it 45 times. They are considered the greenest Brewing in Canada and the 2nd one in North America.
Fun Fact 3: According to our tour guide there are only 1 thing they can’t clean from the bottle. You know what it is? The cap. So don’t be a bad person (she used a dirty word) don’t fold the beer cap and throw inside the bottle.
After the tour we meet with Matt Weed, S.W Special Events Manager. He shared with us all the informations about the Events they have at the brewing. They host weddings, corporate meetings, parties and specially events that they promote, like UNSIGNED – INDIE MUSIC SERIES, The Roundhouse Craft Beer Festival, Octoberfest, Halloween and many others. They don’t need to promote the venue, S.W.B venue reputation comes from word of mouth. They just don’t host events during Christmas, New Years Eve and 1st of January during the other days you can rent the venue for an event. (they host 250 events per year)
S.W.B are all about the GOOD EXPERIENCE. The venue is flexible, you can host a fashion show there, a pillow fight, the venue is a blank canvas. The only problem it is not big, since they are an historic building they can’t construct a bigger space. And they don’t have a parking space.
By the end of the day, it was a great experience. It’s a venue I would definitely use in a event. The place is fantastic, the view of the CN Tower amazing. And if you never took the tour, I strongly suggest you to go.
