The large number of breweries throughout San Diego — which landed on “Esquire” magazine’s list of “America’s Best Beer Cities 2011” — and the bars in its Gaslamp Quarter Historic District create an ideal backdrop for drinking tours. Although the Official Gaslamp Bar Tour has closed, you can still get a taste of the Southern California city’s brews with Brew Hop and Brewery Tours of San Diego.
Brewery Tours of San Diego
Brewery Tours of San Diego offers pub crawls seven days a week with an emphasis on a safe and enjoyable afternoon or evening of bars, tastings and brewery tours. The company’s afternoon tours run on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, with evening tours on Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays. Tours include transportation, tastings, a souvenir glass and, on some tours, lunch or dinner. The company also arranges private tours for small groups and tours for large groups on its Beer Bus.
Brewery Tours of San Diego Brewery Stops
Brewery Tours has established networks with brewery-bars in San Diego. Your tour includes up to three brewery tours, along with tastings at each. Your itinerary might include stops to award-winning and specialty microbreweries such as AleSmith, Point Ballast Brewing Company, Stone Brewing Company, the Lost Abbey, San Diego Brewing Company and San Marco Brewing Company. Taking the tour at different times of the year lets you experience seasonal selections at the breweries, such as Carnevale at the Lost Abbey during Lent season or the Evil Dead Red at AleSmith during Halloween.
Take a short tour of three to four breweries, talk with master brewers and then sidle up to the bars to sample several beers on a Brew Hop tour. The company specializes in tours for bachelor and bachelorette parties, military groups, college students and tourist and business groups. All tours are custom designed from two base packages, a 2.5- or 5-hour tour, with your interests in mind. From Halloween through the new year, Brew Hop offers seasonal tours that focus on holiday brews created by San Diego’s brewing companies.
Brew Hop Pub Stops
Brew Hop partners with two dozen breweries to bring you the most customized tasting and bar-hopping experience possible. You choose the breweries you’d like to visit on your trip, from a list that includes La Jolla Brew House, Green Flash Brewing Company and Firehouse Brewing Company, which gives a portion of its beer proceeds to the Firehouse Foundation. California State Fair-medal winner Lightning Brewing is an option, as is Hess Brewery, San Diego’s first licensed nano-brewery, producing batches of just 51 gallons each.
