Ventura County Fair bounty to include free craft-brew tasting

VENTURA, Calif. – Craft beers are the focus of a new — and free — competition on opening day of the Ventura County Fair.
Bounty of the County — Beer will feature samples from teams of commercial breweries and restaurants from 5 to 7 p.m. July 30 in the agriculture and natural resources building at Seaside Park.
Samples are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis for 200 people. Proof of age will be required for entry to the 21-and-older event.
VIP passes were distributed to those who submitted entries for judging last weekend in the fair’s home-brewing competition.
The first day of the fair is “when all the beer guys come in to see how they did. I figured … let’s give them the VIP treatment while they’re here,” said Charlotte Crocker, who serves as agriculture and natural resources department co-superintendent with her husband, Tom Crocker.
All attendees will be asked to vote in the categories of best brew, best food and best pairing.
Teams will include Firestone Walker Brewing Co. of Paso Robles and Winchester’s Bar & Grill of Ventura, plus Surf Brewery and Saloon BBQ Co., both of Ventura.
Institution Ale Co., which opened in Camarillo in September, will team with The Kitchen restaurant of Oxnard.
Poseidon Brewing Co., which is scheduled to open to the public in mid August, will pour a grapefruit-infused India pale ale during the competition, said owner Brian “Ollie” Oliver. The brewery is working with Barrelhouse 101, also of Ventura.
Curtis Taylor, a certified cicerone who blogs as Hop Head Said, will be on hand with Jason Hendrick of Everybody’s Hungry to tape an episode of their Pints & Pairings show for future broadcast.
The event is a variation on the fair’s pre-existing contest featuring teams of local wineries and restaurants.
Bounty of the County — Wine is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 5. Chefs, restaurants and commercial wineries interested in competing are asked to call Tom and Charlotte Crocker at 648-3376, ext. 140.
